Family photoshoot in Bali: the best spots, times and outfits

Holidays go quickly, and the phone photos rarely have everyone in them. One relaxed hour with a photographer gives you the picture that ends up on the wall.

The best time of day with children

Children run on routines, and Bali’s heat runs on the sun. There are two good windows:

  • Morning, from about 7 to 9 am. Cool air, soft light and children who have just had breakfast. Beaches and rice fields are quiet.
  • Late afternoon, in the last ninety minutes before sunset. Warm, golden light and the chance of a sunset frame. Sunset falls between about 6:00 and 6:45 pm all year.

Avoid late morning to mid-afternoon. The sun is overhead, eyes squint and toddlers wilt.

Bali’s traffic eats into short holidays. A shoot at your villa or on the beach down the road costs no travel time and puts children somewhere they already feel at home.

What to wear in Bali’s heat

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Pick two or three colours, such as cream, white, sage, sand, soft blue or terracotta, and let each person wear them differently.
  • Light fabrics. Linen and cotton breathe in the humidity; synthetics show sweat.
  • Skip big logos, neon and small busy prints. They date the photos and pull the eye away from faces.
  • Feet. Bare on the beach, simple sandals elsewhere.
  • A spare top for each child. Something will get spilled.
  • Hats look lovely in walking shots; take them off for close portraits so faces aren’t in shade.

Keeping children happy, and in the frame

Children don’t hold poses, and they don’t need to. The photos families keep are of a parent swinging a toddler, a hug that turns into tickling, a race across the lawn.

  • Plan around naps and meals. A fed, rested child is the best assistant.
  • Bring snacks that don’t stain: crackers rather than chocolate or red juice.
  • Keep it short. An hour is plenty for under-fives.
  • Let the photographer play. Games beat “say cheese”.
  • Bubbles, a ball or a favourite toy give small hands something to do.

Big families and three generations

Multi-generation trips are common in Bali, and those are the shoots families treasure most later. Do the full group first, while everyone is fresh and neat, then break into households, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings and couples.

Tell the photographer in advance who must be photographed together, so nobody is forgotten when the youngest gets tired.

Couples, honeymoons and travel shoots

The same rules work for two people: soft light, a place close to where you are staying, clothes that suit the setting. Artie photographs couples, anniversaries and personal portraits, and full-day travel itineraries that move across the island, say from a morning in Ubud’s rice terraces to sunset on the coast.

Planning to propose? Artie photographs that too. Read the prewedding guide for locations that work for couples.

Weather and small practical things

  • Book the shoot early in your trip. If it rains, there is room to move it, and you have the photos before the holiday ends.
  • Wet season, from about November to March, often brings clearer mornings and showers later in the day.
  • Sunscreen is fine; put it on early so faces don’t shine.
  • Mosquitoes come out at dusk near rice fields and gardens. Use repellent before the shoot, away from clothes.
  • Files arrive on Google Drive, so the link is easy to share with grandparents at home.

Questions families ask

Where is the best place for a family photoshoot in Bali?

Usually close to where you are staying: your villa garden, the nearest quiet beach or a rice field nearby. Sanur and Nusa Dua suit mornings; Seminyak, Canggu and Jimbaran suit sunset.

What time is best for a family photoshoot with toddlers?

Early morning, from about 7 to 9 am, when it is cool and children are fresh. Late afternoon works too if your children nap after lunch.

How long should a family photoshoot last?

About an hour for families with young children; longer for big groups or when you want two locations.

Can the photographer come to our villa or hotel?

Yes. Artie shoots anywhere in Bali, including your villa, hotel or resort, within the hotel’s rules for outside photographers.

Do you also photograph couples and solo travellers?

Yes. Artie photographs couples and anniversaries, personal portraits and full-day travel itineraries across the island.
