Villa photography in Bali: listing photos that get booked
Guests choose a villa on a phone screen, scrolling past dozens that look alike. The photos have to carry the pool, the light, the quiet and the walk from bed to breakfast.
The first five photos do the selling
On a laptop, an Airbnb listing opens with its first five photos in a grid. On Booking.com, in search results and on Instagram, a single cover image has to do the work. Those first frames decide whether someone taps through or keeps scrolling.
Lead with what sets the villa apart, usually the pool with its view or the living room opening onto it, then the best bedroom. Never lead with a bathroom, a floor plan or an empty driveway. Order the rest the way a guest would walk through: arrival, living spaces, kitchen, each bedroom followed by its bathroom, then the extras.
A shot list for a Bali villa
| Space | What to show | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | The gate, the entrance, the first view inside | Shoot from eye height with the doors open |
| Pool | Wide from the house, low across the water, straight down from above | Skim the leaves and let the water settle first |
| Living and dining | Whole rooms and how they open to the garden | Sliding doors open, cushions straight |
| Kitchen | The whole space, then one styled detail | Clear counters: one bowl of fruit, not ten objects |
| Bedrooms | The room, the bed, the view from the bed | Crisp white linen, pillows plumped |
| Bathrooms | Outdoor showers, bathtubs, stone and plants | Toilet seats down, towels folded alike |
| Views and garden | Rice fields, ocean, jungle, the sunset from the deck | Shoot when the view is clearest, usually morning |
| Extras | Gym, yoga shala, cinema room, kids’ room | Only if they’re ready to use |
| Lifestyle | A floating breakfast, someone reading by the pool | Shows scale and makes the place feel lived in |
Day, dusk and why the lamps go on
Bali’s midday sun flattens pools and burns out white walls. Most interiors look best in the morning or late afternoon, when the light through the windows is soft and the garden outside is still bright enough to see.
Then comes dusk. In the fifteen to thirty minutes after sunset the sky turns deep blue, and the lamps, pool lights and garden lights glow against it. That is often the photo people remember. Plan the shoot so the pool and the main terrace are ready for it, with every bulb working and switched on.
Artie photographs villas by day and after dark, and can deliver a 24-hour edit, so a new listing goes live without waiting.
Getting the villa ready
The day before
- Clean the pool and filter, skim the leaves, top up the water.
- Replace dead bulbs, and use the same warm colour of bulb throughout.
- Wash windows and glass doors.
- Trim the garden and sweep the paths.
- Clear personal items: family photos, toiletries, chargers, shoes, staff belongings.
On the day
- Beds made with white linen, pillows plumped, throws straight.
- Towels folded the same way in every bathroom.
- Remotes, bins, cleaning gear, routers and cables out of sight.
- Ceiling fans off (they blur), curtains open, every light on.
- Cars and scooters moved away from the entrance.
- Fresh frangipani or one simple arrangement; no plastic flowers.
- Staff and neighbours told about filming, if you want quiet for video.
Drone: showing where the villa sits
Guests want to know where a villa is: how far the beach is, what sits next door, whether the rice-field view is real. A few aerial photos and a short drone shot answer that in seconds, and they are hard for a competitor to copy.
Drone flights are restricted around Ngurah Rai Airport, in the Kuta, Tuban and Jimbaran area, and over temples and ceremonies. Artie flies wherever it is allowed.
Film and Reels for direct bookings
A walkthrough film of one to two minutes works on your own website and in emails to guests who book direct, where you keep the platform commission. Short vertical clips of 15 to 30 seconds do the work on Instagram and TikTok: the gate opening, a walk to the pool, the light changing at dusk.
Shoot the film on the same day as the photos, so the villa is only prepared once. Artie films villas with cinematic video and drone, and cuts Reels for social media.
When to reshoot
- After a renovation or new furniture.
- When the garden has grown in, or been cut back.
- When reviews start to say the villa looks different from the photos.
- Before high season, if the photos are more than two years old.

Questions owners ask
How many photos does a villa listing need?
Enough to show every space a guest will use, including each bedroom and bathroom. As a rule of thumb, a three-bedroom villa is well covered by 25 to 40 edited photos.
When is the best time of day to photograph a villa in Bali?
Morning or late afternoon for interiors and gardens, and the half hour after sunset for the pool and terraces with the lights on.
How quickly can we get the photos?
Artie can edit villa photos within 24 hours, so a new listing doesn’t have to wait.
Can you shoot while guests are staying?
It’s better to block a day between bookings. Guests’ belongings end up in the frame and rooms can’t be styled.
Do you photograph resorts and properties for sale?
Yes. Artie photographs and films villas, resorts and property, with drone where flying is allowed.
