Prewedding photoshoot in Bali: where to shoot, when to go and what to bring

Cliffs, rice terraces, a lake temple in the clouds. Bali has more backdrops than one afternoon can hold, so most of the planning is choosing.

When to shoot: the season and the hour

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly from April to October, with clearer skies, lower humidity and the most dependable sunsets. The wet season, from about November to March, brings heavy showers that often arrive in the afternoon and clear within an hour or two, with deep green rice fields and big skies in between. Both seasons work. The wet one needs a plan B and a little give in the timeline.

July and August are the busiest months on the island, and the famous spots fill up at sunset. May, June and September usually give you dry weather with fewer strangers in the background.

The hour matters more than the month. Bali sits eight degrees south of the equator, so from late morning to mid-afternoon the sun is high and hard on faces. Sunset falls between about 6:00 and 6:45 pm all year, and the light turns soft and warm in the hour before it. Sunrise sessions give you empty locations and cool air, in exchange for hair and makeup at 3 am.

Check the calendar as well. On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March, the whole island stops for 24 hours: no traffic, no flights, no shoots. Big temple festivals such as Galungan fill the roads with processions, which is beautiful to see and a hard day to cross the island on.

The best prewedding locations in Bali

Most prewedding locations in Bali give you one of four looks: ocean cliffs, beaches, rice fields and jungle, or cool highlands. This is how they compare.

AreaWhat it looks likeBest lightGood to know
Uluwatu and the BukitLimestone cliffs, turquoise water, white-sand coves such as Melasti and Padang PadangLate afternoon to sunsetSteep steps down to the beaches, wind for veils, entrance fees at some spots

If you can only choose one, choose the place that feels like the two of you rather than the one you have seen most often online. Lempuyang’s “Gates of Heaven” and the Handara gate are famous, and the queue to stand in them can run for hours.

Plan the route, not only the spot

Distances in Bali look short on the map and run long on the road. Canggu to Uluwatu, or Seminyak to Ubud, takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half, more at rush hour. The highlands are about two hours from the south. Every hour in the car is an hour without the camera, and your makeup and outfits feel it too.

So the best prewedding days stay in one area, or pair two places that sit close together:

  • The Uluwatu cliffs, then Melasti beach for sunset.
  • Tegallalang’s terraces in the morning, then a jungle villa in Ubud.
  • Ulun Danu Beratan early, then the pine forest and hills around Bedugul.
  • Your villa for the first outfit, then the nearest beach for sunset.

Concept and outfits

A concept is a short answer to one question: what should these photos feel like? Slow and romantic, playful, cinematic, traditional. Two outfits give a gallery enough variety without spending the afternoon changing clothes, and these pairings suit the island:

  • Formal, then relaxed. A gown and suit on the cliffs, then linen and bare feet on the sand.
  • Traditional, then your own. Balinese payas agung, a Javanese kebaya or a cheongsam for the first set, then the clothes you actually wear.
  • Colours. Cream, white, sage, terracotta and deep red sit well against green fields and blue water. Neon, big logos and small busy prints fight the landscape.
  • Shoes. Flat sandals for cliff paths and rice paddies, with the good shoes carried for the frames.

Traditional Balinese dress takes time to put on and its makeup takes longer than an everyday look, so book a makeup artist who knows the style and start early.

Temples, fees and drones

Temples

Temples are places of worship before they are backdrops. Wear a sarong and sash (most temples lend or rent them at the gate), stay out of inner courtyards unless you are invited in, and never climb on shrines or walls. If a ceremony is under way, the shoot waits.

Entrance and shoot fees

Many beaches, rice terraces and viewpoints charge an entrance fee, and some ask for a separate fee for prewedding or commercial shoots. Fees change often, so check them when you plan the route rather than at the gate.

Drones

Drone flights are restricted around Ngurah Rai Airport, which covers parts of the south, and over temples and ceremonies. Plan aerial shots for places where flying is allowed, such as open coast and highland lakes away from the airport, and keep them short: a minute of drone footage is often enough for a film.

A sample prewedding day

This is how a two-location sunset session might run in the dry season. Move every time to match the sunset on your date.

12:00
Hair and makeup at your villa or hotel: two to three hours for a full look, longer for traditional dress.
14:45
Leave for the first location.
15:30
First outfit. The light starts to soften; shade and cliffs do the rest.
16:45
Change and move to the second location.
17:15
Second outfit through golden hour.
18:15
Sunset, then ten minutes of blue hour for the last frames.

Keep half an hour of slack in the plan. Traffic, a gust of wind or a passing procession will use it.

What to bring

  • Both outfits on hangers and steamed, with safety pins and a lint roller.
  • Flat shoes to walk in, and the good shoes in a bag.
  • Sarongs and sashes if a temple is on the route.
  • Water, a small towel and blotting papers for the heat.
  • Insect repellent for rice fields at dusk, sprayed away from your outfits.
  • A clear umbrella in the wet season; it photographs better than a black one.
  • Props that mean something: a letter, your vows, the ring box, flowers from your venue.

Questions couples ask

How long is a prewedding photoshoot in Bali?

Most couples plan half a day: hair and makeup first, then three to four hours of shooting across one or two nearby locations, finishing at sunset. A full day works if you want to combine the coast and the highlands.

What is the best month for a prewedding shoot in Bali?

The dry season, April to October, is the most reliable. May, June and September usually combine dry weather with fewer crowds than July and August.

Can we do a prewedding shoot at a temple in Bali?

At some temples, yes, if you follow the dress code, stay out of restricted courtyards and avoid ceremony days. Some temples charge a fee for prewedding shoots and some don’t allow them, so check before you plan around one.

Can we have photo and video in the same session?

Yes. Artie shoots prewedding photo and film together, with drone where flying is allowed.

What if it rains on the day?

Wet-season showers usually pass within an hour or two. Leave slack in the timeline, keep a covered place such as your villa in reserve, and bring a clear umbrella.
